A FEW MUSICAL LINKS
Hey, yet another night when I'm refraining from posts about plastic dog poop museums and such! I'm really quite proud of myself..but be warned, when I finally DO fall off the gravitas wagon, it could get weird..
Russell Musical Instrument Collection - great early keyboard collection in Edinburgh..
Brazilian Music Manuscript Archive - in English or Portuguese..
The A Train - A personal site by a jazz fan, containing his reviews of classic jazz albums. Many insights, nice resource for those just starting out in assembling a jazz collection - or for the more advanced who might enjoy comparing impressions..
Freeform and Kozimigroove Well done site(s) about some esoteric, hard to define but easy to like music..
Smooth Jazz Reviews - OK, purists may scoff, but there's times when I don't want to think, and get all musicological. I just want something relaxing and melodic setting the mood..
William Roper is a tubaist and visual artist from the west coast. He's played with people like Yusef Lateef, James Newton and Horace Tapscott, composed symphonic works, and created installation pieces. Very creative guy, well done website.

OUTSIDER ART / 'ART BRUT'
These terms, along with 'folk art' , 'primitive art' etc., can cover a wide range - in both type and quality. Basically, they refer to artists without formal training, and without ties to established schools and traditions. People who just felt the creative urge, and picked up a brush, with no one to tell them they were doing it all wrong.
Of course, it's chic to be into outsider art. So there's a lot of AWFUL stuff out there riding on the bandwagon. Still, I'm sure that if you browse the following sites, you'll come across some works that move you, and allow you to 'see' in a new way..
Raw Vision - a magazine devoted to this topic; read up on it as well as see some..
Faith at Reality Felon - nice site by a practitioner..

And finally, if you REALLY want to explore 'outsider art' in depth, check out Intuit - hundreds of links!

MORBID ART
Nver let it be said that I don't cater to the crowd! Since I've received the most enthusiastic responses lately when I've focused on the grotesque, macabre, funereal, and monstruous..not to mention ghastly, depraved, sinister and horrific, well, let's just continue in with this happy trend! (Besides, I've been fascinated by this stuff since I was a wee lad, anyway. Suppose I could have ended up as a serial killer - or a bestselling novelist - but I decided to just be a drug addict for twenty years, and then become a Dosteyevskian office drudge who keeps a link blog..)
The Morbid Muse Gallery - a few choice bits here..
To make sure you're acquainted with the 'classics' of macabre art, check out this Webshots album , and also check out the many other fine albums linked at the left of the page..
Michael Edlen pursues art in a gothic vein..
..as does the Dutchman Marcel Dejong..
Alison Talamia spices up her morbid vision with generous helpings of dark humor. Love her duck killings gallery!
Caleb Storms - Apolocalyptic Youth, and other dark photography..
Ann Erpino has some nice morbid painitings mixed in here..
Hans Belmer's bizarre dolls, from the 1930's - a protest against the Nazi's, and a summation of his own twisted eroticism.. (annoying 'popups' here, but worth the hassle!)
Huge collection of links to 'SciFi-Fantasy-Space-Surreal Art'
Surrealism site (part of larger avant garde art site) - in German, but easy enough to navigate even if you're 'deutsch deprived'.. tons of good links here as well..
And, last but not least, The Dying Sun..

GREAT EARLY HORROR MOVIES
When it comes to horror movies, I have to admit, the slice and dice stuff hardly gives me a chill. I'm much more affected by the atmosphere of movies such as the following classics..
Nosferatu - Max Schreck was certainly the UGLIEST screen vampire! More on this F.W. Murnau landmark..
Vampyr , Dreyer's version of the legend.. discussed intelligently here..
The same site takes an in depth look at Wegener's 'Der Golem'
The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari - can you say 'German Expressionism?' More on Wiene's classic..
Finally, a fun site, lots of effects - 'Pictorial History of Horror Movies'
One might say that the true subject of the horror genre is the struggle for recognition of all that our civilization represses and oppresses.

EARLY AMERICAN REBELLIONS AND DISPUTES
A study of American History shows that the road to the Republic was a rocky one, with numerous struggles along the way. Here are just a few..
The Antinomian Dispute - this 17th century controversy over a point of Calvinist theology may seem obscure and irrelevant today. However, as an early example of dissension and populist attacks on the established order, as well as the remarkable role of Ann Hutchinson - a woman liberated a few hundred years before the suffragettes - it is worth examining.
Shay's Rebellion in Western Massachusetts. Another site..
This article, on events in and around Keene, New Hampshire during Shay's Rebellion, was written by Zach Rubin, a high school student, and just posted online a week ago. I hope Zach intends to continue as a historian!
The Whiskey Rebellion - George Washington plays the heavy!
Nice painting here..
The Dorr War - a bit later, in the 1840's, Thomas Dorr led a struggle for the rights of the landless in my native Rhode Island. More here.. In my younger days, I would often stop by his grave in Swan Point cemetary (final resting place also of H.P.Lovecraft) and drink a toast and smoke a joint in honor of the erstwhile old radical..
Speaking of old graves, here's a great archive of New England cemetary photos..
I hold it, that a little rebellion, now and then, is a good thing, and as necessary in the political world as storms in the physical.

FOOD
Well, since I was mentioned by Maarten in the 'Dailyrecipes' group as a possible source for recipes from the Great Depression, I got started on a search. However, that's a rather difficult topic, and I'll need more time to delve into it. Meanwhile, I got really bummed out by ending up at all those sites about 'depression'...thanks, Maarten!
But, as usually happens, just getting started on any search leads me to some sites of interest, so I'll share a few food related links I found. If you are visiting from the recipe group, welcome, and I hope you find something to make your visit worthwhile!
Aunt Runner's Recipes - nice site, which also includes a 'lost recipe message board' wherein you can request help in locating the same..

Does it Matter?
DOES it matter?--losing your legs?...
For people will always be kind,
And you need not show that you mind
When the others come in after hunting
To gobble their muffins and eggs.
Does it matter?--losing your sight?...
There's such splendid work for the blind;
And people will always be kind,
As you sit on the terrace remembering
And turning your face to the light.
Do they matter?--those dreams from the pit?...
You can drink and forget and be glad,
And people won't say that you're mad;
For they'll know you've fought for your country
And no one will worry a bit.

CAMBODIA
I've had an interest in the Khmer culture for some time; my church shares a building and several programs with a Cambodian church, and I've made a few friends who escaped the 'Killing Fields' , often losing their whole families first.
