This amazing reclusive poetess, who rarely left her home in Amherst, MA , proved that life can be experienced intensely in the most circumscribed conditions...

Her poems

An appreciation by Galway Kinnell

I have lived most of my life in an an area where 'going bowling' requires an additional choice - what kind? For those who only know the '10 Pin' variety, well, you've missed out! Sure, you've got the biggest balls, but we get more action..

Duckpin Bowling - found in maybe half a dozen states. Squat pins, medium balls.

Candlepin Bowling - Invented in Worcester, MA , still played here and also a big hit in the maritime provinces of Canada. The smallest balls, cylindrical pins. Good part - you don't clear away the deadwood, you USE it!

And, one I've never tried: 5 Pin Bowling . Seems to be a Canadian thing also - if any of my Canadian readers have tried it, I'd love to hear your opinions - is it worth a pilgrimage to Edmonton?

Got a pet hermit crab? Then you need this site..

The Ghan Arrives in Darwin - sensational Australian train route kicks off..

For whip collectors..

"If once a man indulges himself in murder, very soon he comes to think little of robbing; and from robbing he next comes to drinking and sabbath-breaking, and from that to incivility and procrastination."
