The Varieties of Religious Experience, by William James . Complete online text. This book, by the great American pragmatist philospher, deserves its own link. It had a huge impact on the founders of Alcoholics Anonymous, and indeed, upon my own life. It's basic premise was not to approach 'religious experience' from the theological perspective, but rather in terms of phenomena that exists, and can be studied - the reality of suddenlyf changed lives. Regardless of one's belief or non-belief in God and/or spirituality, a fact that cannot be denied is that throughout history, countless individuals have expereinced profound, life-altering changes through what they, at least, perceived as encounters with the supranormal.
