THE EDMUND FITGERALD
Like so many, I first heard the story of "The Wreck of the Edmund Fitgerald" through Gordon Lightfoot's haunting song. (Listen here)
A geography class assignment here discusses the environmental factors involved in the wreck.
It has also been the inspiration for a symphonic work
by the composer Nikola Resonovic.
A web site for a movie on the wreck has more information..

WHALES AND WHALING
This summer, I went on a whale watching cruise in the Stellwagen Banks , off the coast of Massachusetts. A lively young naturalist from the Center for Coastal Studies in Provincetown taught us much about these fascinating mammals.
The whaling industry was huge in the history of the Massachusetts coast. New Bedford, Captain Ahab's home port in Moby Dick, now has a fascinating whaling museum.
Of course, the contemporary whaling industry threatens the very survival of these creatures. Some links which provide history and activist info are: site 1 ; site 2 ; site 3 ; site 4 ;
Finally, a nice whale Photo Gallery .
